A shooting at a Highlands Ranch area arcade is said to have left one dead, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a report from the law enforcement agency, the situation unfolded on Saturday night, with an ‘active shooter’ call received that was related to a situation at the Main Event location in Highlands Ranch. The initial law enforcement response took place at 11:51 p.m.

The first deputy that arrived at the scene is said to have encountered a male in the parking lot who was allegedly armed with a handgun. That male reportedly failed to comply with commands to drop the weapon before turning toward the deputy, with the deputy firing his weapon in response and hitting the man. Despite life-saving measures, the man succumbed to wounds he sustained.

Meanwhile, a 23-year-old female suspect is accused of shooting someone inside of the business. According to law enforcement, she is suspected of shooting another female in the chest, with that female expected to survive.

At the time of the shooting, Main Event was described to be “packed” by law enforcement with many patrons inside of the business, creating a “very dangerous situation” as multiple shots rang out.

The motive behind the alleged shooting remains under investigation, as does a possible connection between the man in the parking lot and the woman who is alleged to have shot someone inside of the business.

“This situation could have been much worse,” said law enforcement. “Obviously, you have a large entertainment center like Main Event here. You have shots being fired inside. […] It was a very dangerous, chaotic scene, and we still have a lot to work through, but this could have been much worse.”

The shooting is believed to have unfolded in less than a minute. Multiple firearms are said to have been found at the scene.

“We urge the community not to rush to judgment and to allow detectives time to complete their investigation. The priority remains the safety of our residents, and we are grateful for the swift actions of our deputies in responding to this dangerous situation. All suspects are to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
