Five Denver Broncos named to NFL All-Pro teams

Marvin Mims, Quinn Meinerz and Pat Surtain named first team; Zach Allen, Nik Bonitto on second team

ENGLEWOOD — Five Broncos have been named to NFL All-Pro teams by the Associated Press.

Defensive lineman Zach Allen (second team), outside linebacker Nik Bonitto (second team), punt return specialist Marvin Mims (first team), right guard Quinn Meinerz (first team) and cornerback Pat Surtain (first team) were all recognized on Friday.

It represents the most All-Pro selections in Broncos history since 1996 when six players were honored.

“Remember, it’s one team: AFC and NFC. It’s a tremendous honor for those guys, and I’m proud of all of them,” coach Sean Payton said on Friday after practice at Broncos Park. “Our team was excited for all of them. Much deserved.”

Surtain is an NFL Defensive Player of the Year candidate who posted four interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) and 11 pass deflections. He was also named first-team All-Pro in 2022. Bonitto led the Broncos with 13.5 sacks in the regular season, and this is his first All-Pro team selection. Mims paced the NFL in average punt return yards (15.7), and he was named second-team All-Pro last year as a rookie.

All three players were named Pro Bowl starters.

Meinerz and Allen got redemption after being snubbed for the Pro Bowl.

Meinerz earned first-team All-Pro honors for the first time in his career. He allowed one or fewer pressures in 11 games this season, per Next Gen Stats, and was rated as the AFC’s top guard by Pro Football Focus. Meinerz lived up to a four-year, $80-million contract extension that he signed in the offseason.

“To be named the No. 1 right guard, it’s incredible,” Meinerz said on Friday. “I’ve set out on these types of lofty goals going all the way back to rookie year. Some days, I wasn’t really convinced that it was an obtainable goal. On an induvial perspective, I’m proud of myself. These things don’t happen by accident. Hard work works. I’ve had a really good season and I’m looking to keep getting better.”

Allen registered a career-best 8.5 sacks and led all defensive tackles with 67 quarterback pressures, according to Next Gen Stats. He also led the NFL in quarterback hits (40). This is Allen’s first All-Pro honor.

“It definitely means a lot. A lot of work went into it. A lot of people helped me get here,” Allen said on Friday. “When you play with great players, it definitely helps, too. You saw we got five guys. It’s really cool for kind of the country starting to recognize what we’re doing here. [We’re] building something special. Hopefully, we can just keep it going into the playoffs.”

The All-Pro team was selected by 50 people on a national panel with players awarded three points for a first-team vote and one point for a second-team vote.

Surtain earned 49 first-team votes and 148 points.

The following Broncos received points but did not make the All-Pro team: fullback Michael Burton (6), wide receiver Courtland Sutton (1), left tackle Garett Bolles (9), safety Brandon Jones (5) and long snapper Mitch Fabroni (8).
