28 percent increase in summer camping fees proposed for some RMNP campgrounds

A proposal is underway at Rocky Mountain National Park that would increase the cost of summer camping by 28.5 percent at some of the destination’s most popular campgrounds.

Under the proposal, which would roll out in 2025, summer overnight fees at campgrounds of Moraine Park, Glacier Basin, Aspenglen, and Timber Creek would increase from $35 to $45 per night. New electric-access sites at Moraine Park campground would also be opened with a $55 per night cost. Winter rates and group site fees remain unchanged, as would the first-come first-served Longs Peak Campground.

A key reason behind the price hike is to match fees at other similar nearby campgrounds, with the fee increase also said to be necessary for improving and maintaining the park’s visitor experience. A few projects that these fees help fund include hazardous tree mitigation, campground development, trail repair and improvements, and bear management.

When it comes to ‘amenity’ and entrance fees at national parks, the local parks retain 80 percent of the amount collected, with 20 percent collected by and distributed throughout the National Park System.

A public comment period is underway. Comments can be made here through May 23, 2024.
