Tesla catches on fire in Douglas County, closes part of Highway 83

Both southbound and northbound lanes of the highway were closed following the fire

An electric vehicle caught fire in Douglas County on Wednesday morning, closing down multiple lanes of Highway 83, Parker Road, for more than two hours.

South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR), the Parker Police Department and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fire at 6001 South Highway 83 — south of Castle Rock — around 11:30 a.m. A white electric vehicle, seemingly a Tesla, had caught fire.

Both northbound and southbound lanes of Parker Road between South Pinery Parkway and North Pinery Parkway were shut down around 11:40 a.m. as the fire began spreading from the vehicle into the nearby grass, according to a social media post by SMFR.

The SMFR Hazmat Team placed an EV Fire Blanket over the vehicle in an attempt to smother the oxygen as the car seemingly melted down to the underlying frame.

One northbound lane on Parker Road was opened around 1 p.m. as emergency responders continued to fight the fire. Southbound Parker Road remained closed.

All lanes in both directions were then closed again around 1:30 p.m. after responders took off the fire blanket and found the vehicle still smoldering, just seats and tires left standing.

“Crews are monitoring the fire and letting it burn itself out before towing the vehicle away,” SMFR said in a subsequent post, noting that both sides of Parker Road will remain closed for the time being.

The driver of the vehicle was able to escape prior to the fire and was not injured, the department noted. The cause of the fire has not been identified.
