A recently shared TikTok video shows a massive elk herd spotted in Estes Park.

Wildlife photographer Seth Powell shared the video on TikTok on Monday. In the video, the elk herd is crossing a road. Powell appears to be filming from a vehicle. The elk graze on vegetation as they cross the road, and their bugles are audible throughout the video.

“Wonder what they are eating,” one commenter wrote. “All I see is snow, no grass.”

“I love their sounds,” another commented.

The elk rut typically occurs from late August to mid-October, and large groups of the species are commonly spotted in Estes Park, especially during the mating season. Elk usually migrate to lower elevations in the winter to find warmer temperatures.

If you do see elk, it’s important to give them their space. CPW says a good way to stay safe is to use the “rule of thumb.” If you lift your thumb to a wild animal and can see it extending beyond your thumb then you are too close and should back away slowly. Also, be sure to keep pets on a leash in areas where you might encounter wildlife.
