An 18-year-old was shot and killed by an Aurora police officer after he opened fire at officers in an apartment complex early Sunday morning, according to the Aurora Police Department.

Late Saturday night, police responded to a weapons and assault call at an apartment complex in the 1900 block of South Vaughn Way in south Aurora, according to an APD news release.

Police said the caller reported a man assaulted a woman and threatened multiple people and a roommate with a firearm. During the incident, the suspect eventually went inside an apartment with a hostage.

The suspect and victims all lived in the same apartment complex, according to police.

Aurora’s police hostage negotiation team successfully facilitated the release of the victim without further injury, before the incident escalated later, according to police.

At around 1 a.m., the suspect appeared in the front doorway and fired multiple shots at officers. There, police said, an officer returned fire, striking the man.

Officers at the scene performed life saving measures on the 18-year-old man and rushed him to the hospital, where he later died Sunday morning, police said.

The involved officer was placed on paid administrative leave, according to police.

The 18th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team will investigate the officer involved shooting. Meanwhile, APD will conduct a parallel administration review of the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing, according to police.
