OPENING WEEK

The magic word for winter sports films: Warren Miller, lovingly remembered as a “ski bum” called the “godfather” of the medium. Warren Miller Entertainment, producing one major film considered the start of the skiing and skateboarding season every year since 1949, will honor the 75th film and what would have been his 100th birthday. He died in 2018. First up was a sold-out series opening celebration last Tuesday at Boulder Theatre. Now the world tour is shredding its way to theaters nationally and worldwide. One million is the magic number at Denver Art Museum and this could be the weekend as it celebrates free general admission for one million youngsters since 2015. The milestone is the focus Thursday through Sunday with a whole variety of free, family-friendly activities including chalk art and face painting. The Free for Kids program is for those 18 and under including groups and camps. For the special ticketed events there is $5 admission. Bellco Credit Union had supported Free for Kids since 2016 and became the presenting sponsor in 2023. Free programs this fall include  Indigenous arts of North America, Latin American art, arts of Asia, photography, textile arts, fashion and western American art as well as galleries of arts of Africa, arts of Oceania and modern and contemporary art. There are artmaking activities in the Dream Studio. DAM is open daily, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and until 8 p.m. Tuesdays, 100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy.

Several hundred ink artists will be touring into  Colorado Springs for the first time this weekend for the 27th Villain Arts Tattoo Festival.  Competitions, guest stars from “Black Ink” and “Ink Master” and sideshow entertainment during the three-day tattoo show. Burlesque, a sword swallower and aerialists suspended by piercings are some of the features. Judges select a Tattoo of the Day and, on Sunday, Best of Show. The metro area is packed with Halloween events and hauntings and here are some. The Arapahoe County Fairgrounds turn into “Scaregrounds” for the weekend with Halloween activities for families at its 5th annual Treat Street. Go trick or treating, travel through the haunted maze, take carriage rides, visit the petting zoo and compete for best costumes. Food trucks and a beer garden. Not your regular crowd at Larimer Square Saturday when the walking dead come strolling through during the annual Denver Zombie Crawl. Icky types, scary DJ music, spooky happenings, a costume contest and Halloween cocktails.
