Horrible cycling crash in Boulder sends 1984 Tour de France Feminin winner to hospital

GoFundMe page set up to help with medical expenses

Boulder resident and acclaimed road cyclist, Marianne Martin, who won the first ever Tour de France Feminin in 1984, is in the hospital after a horrible crash while descending Sunshine Canyon on Oct. 6, Jeff Platt, a spokesperson for Martin said in a release Tuesday.

Platt said the accident happened while descending Sunshine Canyon when Martin apparently overcorrected on a turn at a high rate of speed, crashing her bike and suffered a collapsed lung, concussion, fractured clavicle in two places, 12 broken ribs (some in multiple places), and road rash.

She was transported by ambulance to the emergency room and spent several days in the ICU.

Martin had surgery on Thursday to install pins and plates to properly align multiple broken ribs. As of Friday, Martin has been in a standard hospital room, but has an epidural drip to manage the pain, which according to Platt “is not insignificant.”

Martin’s GoFundMe page organizer Lindasue Smollen said of Martin’s crash, “The long road to full recovery has just started for her, with your contribution she’ll have an easier time dealing with the many issues she faces. And I’m sure we’re all looking forward to Marianne being back on the bike and kicking ass.”

Martin had surgery on Sunday and it went well, with her leaving the ICU, but will continue to be monitored and kept in the hospital for at least another four days.

Smollen said Martin is in a fair amount of pain and grimaces at almost the slightest movement, but the road rash on her face is healing quite well.

“She’s very very tired, but that’s to be expected. Overall, after a week, I think she’s doing great,” Smollen said.

“She was able to do a short walk, unassisted, around the ICU yesterday and she promises to post it on Strava,” Platt said.

The community has raised nearly $11,000 on GoFundMe to help pay Marianne’s medical bills following the crash. Here is the fundraiser link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-marianne-martin-heal-after-bike-accident

Martin won the Tour de France Feminin course, covering 670 miles in 29 hours, 39 minutes, and 2 seconds. The race was held in July 1984 and had 18 stages.

The women’s tour ran the same time as the men’s and finished 2–3 hours before the men each day.

Martin, along with runners up Heleen Hage and Deborah Shumway, stood on the podium with male champions Laurent Fignon, Bernard Hinault and Greg LeMond. Fignon’s prizes were valued at over $225,000 (adjusted to 2016 value). Martin was awarded a trophy and $1,000.

Martin was inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. She was a 2020 inductee to the US Bicycling Hall of Fame.
