1 killed near Aurora apartment complex impacted by alleged Venezuelan gang activity
There is no information connecting the shooting to gang activity at this time, police say
The Aurora Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Friday evening near the Whispering Pines apartment complex — one of the three complexes marred by potential Venezuelan gang activity.
Police responded to a report of a shooting at a business near the intersection of East Colfax Avenue and Helena Street around 9 p.m., according to a press release from the department. One man was taken to a nearby hospital with “multiple” gunshot wounds. He later died from his injuries.
A preliminary investigation indicated that two men were at a liquor store and got into an argument with two other men. The argument escalated to a physical fight, eventually leading to the victim — a 38-year-old man — getting shot multiple times, police said.
Witnesses told police the three suspects sped from the scene in a silver sedan after the gunfire.
The identity of the victim and cause of death will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office following investigations.
The shooting location is around 0.2 miles from the Whispering Pines Condominiums, one of the three owned by CBZ Management and the one that had allegedly been taken over by members of the Tren de Aragua Venezuelan prison gang.
A national law firm that investigated the claims said that, through violence and intimidation, the gang took over the Whispering Pines and sought to collect up to half of the rent from leaseholders, drying up collections for the landlord, according to a law firm’s investigation.
At this time, there is no suspect information in the Friday shooting and there is “no information at this time about any possible connections to the migrant community or gang activity,” the department said.
On Friday, the department noted that they had obtained arrest warrants for three men connected to an Aug. 18 shooting at The Edge at Lowry at East 12th Avenue and Dallas Street at about 11:30 p.m. — another apartment complex owned by CBZ Management, who started the initial claims about gang takeovers at the three complexes.
The shooting was captured on video, which went viral, putting a national spotlight on Aurora.
The three are Anderson Zambrano-Pacheco, 25, Niefred Jose Serpa-Acosta, 20, and Naudi Lopez Fernandez, 21, on charges of first-degree burglary and menacing with a firearm.
Lopez-Fernandez is in custody, while police are searching for the two other suspects.
Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain said the department is working to determine whether the men are members of the Tren de Aragua.
