Kids fishing derby set for Pikes Peak this month
A scenic Pikes Peak fishery is calling to kids for a special occasion.
The second annual Youth Fishing Derby is set for Sept. 14 at Crystal Reservoir, off the Pikes Peak Highway. From 8:30-11:30 a.m., the event is free for kids ages 6-15 and their guardians.
The first 100 kids in need will be provided gear. The derby will kick off with quick lessons on casting, knot-tying, baiting and handling fish.
The organizing Pikes Peak-America’s Mountain, an enterprise under the city of Colorado Springs, counted 168 youth at last year’s inaugural derby.
“This event not only provides a fun and educational experience for kids, but also fosters a love for the outdoors and conservation,” Pikes Peak-America’s Mountain Manager Skyler Rorabaugh said in a statement.
The derby will end with awards and a free lunch. Kids don’t need a state fishing license, and parents need not worry about reserving and buying a Pikes Peak Highway ticket.
They do need to register and sign an online waiver: pikespeakcolorado.aluvii.com/event
