Broncos at Jets grades: Denver’s defense dominates in close win
The Broncos beat the New York Jets on Sunday to improve their record to 2-2 on the season.
Here are the grades for Sunday’s 10-9 victory:
Offense
The Broncos won the game with only 60 yards passing from rookie Bo Nix. The rain really hampered him, and he only found rhythm on one drive, which led to the the team’s only touchdown. Denver did find a running game as Javonte Williams looked the best he has since a knee injury. His 16 carries for 77 yards were key to the victory.
Grade: C
Defense
Vance Joseph’s crew is becoming one of the best in the NFL. Denver’s ‘D’ held Aaron Rodgers and the Jets to three field goals and 248 total yards. Safety Brandon Jones continues to make plays by forcing a fumble on the first drive of the game. Denver followed up their seven-sack performance last week with five sacks Sunday.
Grade: A
Special teams
Wil Lutz was perfect until his missed field goal with under 2 minutes remaining in regulation, a kick that would have extended the lead to four points. It wasn’t an easy kick from 50 yards, but Lutz has been reliable. Riley Dixon continues to shine as the Broncos punter had three punts downed inside the 20-yard line.
Grade: B-
Coaching
Sean Payton challenged two plays that were questionable at best. The two challenge losses cost Denver when it looked like Rodgers fumbled late but the play was blown dead. Also, some play calling late almost cost the Broncos game.
Grade: C
