Remembering the 10 victims of the 2021 Boulder mass shooting

The murder trial of Ahmad Alissa started trial in Boulder this week.

Ten lives were lost during a mass shooting at the King Soopers on Table Mesa Drive in Boulder on March 22, 2021.

While the trial of suspect Ahmad Alissa, 25, begins in a Boulder County court with opening statements Thursday, The Denver Gazette takes the time to remember those lost.

Denny Stong, 20, was the youngest person to be killed at King Soopers. He had been working at the store for two years, saving up to become a pilot. Denny Stong

At 20 years old, Denny Stong was the youngest victim in the Boulder mass shooting. Stong worked at the store overnight and was beloved by his fellow coworkers. The young man was not working on the day of the shooting, but was in the store to get lunch. He was last seen running toward the shooter by a coworker.

Stong wanted to be a pilot since high school, his friends told The Denver Gazette. He was also a Civil War buff and loved oldies music, according to his friends.

Neven Stanisic

Neven Stanisic, 23, was a Serbian refugee from Bosnia, along with his family. He was a member of the St. John the Baptist Serbian Orthodox Church in Lakewood and worked as a coffee machine repairman. He was working a job at the King Soopers when the shooting occurred.

Stanisic was described as a “fine young man” who was a “really good, honest, hardworking person,” by his pastor, Radovan Petrovic, to The Denver Gazette’s news partner, 9News.

Rikki Olds

Rikki Olds, 25, was a manager at King Soopers during the shooting. She graduated from Centaurus High School in Lafayette in 2013. She was known as a light-hearted, fun-loving person by her friends and family.

“She would do anything to make (you) smile,” Carlee Lough, a friend and King Soopers employee, said. “If you needed a pick-me-up, you knew where to go.”

Tralona Bartkowiak

Tralona “Lonna” Bartkowiak, 49, owned Umba Love with her sister, Leesah Noble. The Pearl Street store sold festival wear, yoga clothing and other “hippie culture” items for over a decade. The store still goes on to support local artists, part of Bartkowiak’s dream.

Bartkowiak had recently gotten engaged at the time of the shooting. In a group of Facebook posts after her death, friends described her as kind, compassionate, bright, generous, “a free spirit,” “super loved,” “the light of my life” and “a true angel on Earth.”

Teri Leiker

Teri Leiker, 51, had been an employee at the King Soopers for 31 years after growing up in Boulder County. She was known as a presence in the community who was always willing to help, often planting daisies, dancing and being part of University of Colorado Boulder’s Best Buddies program for 11 years.

She was a graduate of Longmont High School’s special education program, played basketball and softball in the Special Olympics and was a devotee of the CU’s women’s hockey games.

Eric Talley

Eric Talley, 51, was born in Texas. Joining the Boulder Police Department in 2010, he served as a police officer for 11 years, playing a part in the Explorers program for young boys and girls becoming police officers.

A computer science major, Tally said he entered the police force because it was less stressful than trouble-shooting computers, according to his online obituary.

Suzanne Fountain

Suzanne Fountain, 59, was a local award winning theater actress who, in 2002, stepped away from the show business to work 15 years at Boulder Community Hospital. There, Fountain helped hundreds of senior citizens enroll in Medicare.

Born in Flemington, N.J., Fountain moved to Colorado in the early 1980s for its peace-loving bohemian lifestyle, making music and creating art. She worked for years at Nancy’s, Boulder’s iconic restaurant that closed in 1999.

Kevin Mahoney

Kevin Mahoney, 61, was born in Winnipeg, Canada, and grew up in the United States. He moved to Denver to work in hospitality and hotel development and loved his job, so much so, that family members jokingly called him a workaholic, according to 9NEWS reports.

After his retirement in 2014, Mahoney fell in love with becoming an outdoorsman and hiker. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he celebrated one his daughter’s wedding and got closer with his children through quarantine, 9NEWS reported.

Lynn Murray

Lynn Murray, 62, was born in Ohio, lived in New York, but chose to live in Boulder for the views. Murray worked her way up in the field of photography and worked for a famous studio in New York City, also working for publications like Marie Claire and Conde Nast.

Family and friends described Murray as unlike anyone else and beloved. She met her husband in 1991. Over their 30 years together, he said he’s never met anyone else like her, according to 9NEWS reports.

Jody Waters

Jody Waters, 65, was committed Colorado’s fashion industry and had dreams of one day setting up her own boutique. She was described by family and friends as a people magnet.

A native of Barrington, Ill, Waters owned clothing stores in Boulder and Denver for more than 23 years, according to her family. While she valued hard work, she was never too busy for others.
