Marijuana sales in Colorado have decreased each month in 2023 compared to 2022
Colorado recorded almost $20 million less in marijuana sales for September than in the same month in 2022, continuing a year-over-year monthly trend for 2023.
Sales have decreased each month this year compared to the same period in 2022.
In September, the Department of Revenue recorded nearly $128 million in sales of recreational and medical marijuana, down from about $146.9 million in September 2022. The state’s marijuana sales reports reflect total medical sales and sales from all adult-use retail stores in each county.
The Department of Revenue shows state tax and fee revenue at about $22.8 million for October, down from nearly $26 million in October 2022.
The state recorded the highest monthly sales in March, at $136.2 million.
The taxes for marijuana include 15 percent on retail products and an excise tax of 15 percent on wholesale transfers or sales of retail marijuana, according to the Department of Revenue. Retail products containing marijuana have been exempt from a 2.9 percent state sales tax since July 2017.
Since sales of recreational-use marijuana began in 2014, total sales of recreational and medical marijuana through September stood at about $15.2 billion and about $2.6 billion in tax and fees revenue through October, according to Department of Revenue figures.
Recorded recreational marijuana sales first outpaced medical marijuana sales in November 2014, and made up nearly 87 percent of sales in 2022.
The state recorded the highest monthly total sales since January 2014 in July of 2020, during the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic, at $226.4 million.
