A Colorado holiday tradition continues thanks to the U.S. Forest Service.

Permits for purchase became available this week to cut your own evergreen tree in the Pike-San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands.

“Whether this is your first time cutting your own Christmas tree or it’s been a family tradition for generations, it is a special experience that creates lifelong memories,” officials said in the U.S. Forest Service news release.

Permits can be bought online or in person in person between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the ranger office at 601 South Weber St. Click or tap here for more information on other ranger offices.

The Forest Service also offers free permits to any fourth-grade student across the state as part of the Every Kid Outdoors initiative.

“For students to receive a free tree permit, they must present a valid paper voucher printed from the Every Kid Outdoors website,” Forest Service officials said.

The Forest Service reminds those participating to bring a printed version of their acquired permit, and a map as cell service can be sparse or unavailable.

“Keep in mind that Forest Service roads are generally not plowed and some roads close seasonally. Handsaws and axes are the only tools allowed – chainsaws are prohibited,” officials said, adding to dress in warm layers and to bring a rope to secure the tree to your vehicle once it’s cut.

Tree costs range from $10-$20. Maps marking designated cutting areas are available online, along with tips and tricks for selecting and cutting trees.

“Permitted dates and areas vary so it is important to carefully read all the information prior to purchasing,” officials said.
