Biden reschedules Jan. 6 speech to Friday as winter storm approaches

President Joe Biden will move his speech marking the third anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot up a day due to inclement weather.

Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have marked each Jan. 6 anniversary with major speeches, highlighting the day’s events as a reminder of what they say are ongoing threats to democracy.

The president is scheduled to visit Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, the site of George Washington’s headquarters during the American Revolution, to mark the occasion this year, likely because Washington famously gave up the presidency in 1796 rather than seeking to hold on to power for a third term.

But with a major storm expected in the Northeast on Saturday, the day of the anniversary, the speech will be made on Friday, Jan. 5, instead.

The speech will come as former President Donald Trump, who many blame for the events of Jan. 6, seeks another term in the White House and is the runaway leader in the GOP primary. Trump is facing dozens of federal indictments, some related to Jan. 6, as he seeks reelection.

Biden trails Trump by more than 2 points in the RealClearPolitics polling average. Campaign officials told reporters Tuesday that in the coming weeks, the president and Vice President Harris will “lay out the stakes” of the general election in November.

“The threat Donald Trump posed in 2020 to American democracy has only grown more dire in the years since,” Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said earlier this week on a call with reporters. “There’s less than two weeks until GOP primary voters begin casting ballots in Iowa, and former President Donald Trump’s extreme and dangerous MAGA agenda continues to define the Republican Party.”

Republicans have tended to distance themselves from the events of Jan. 6 and have not been as vocal about marking the anniversary.

In fact, the Trump campaign has released a memo saying that Biden is a threat to democracy, charging that he has weaponized government via the Department of Justice and efforts to remove Trump from the ballot.
