With a holiday weekend ahead, many Coloradans will be taking to the roads and skies as they travel to meet friends and family around the country and globe. While there’s still quite a bit of uncertainty regarding what weather these Coloradans can expect to encounter, it’s looking like a winter storm is possible.

According to the National Weather Service, the next storm system expected to hit the state is traveling to the Colorado region from about 1,300 miles away as of Tuesday afternoon. Still days out, a lot can change.

The National Weather Service was quick to note that there’s a bit of uncertainty related to snow totals, especially considering warmer temperatures that are expected. Those warmer temperatures could mean precipitation comes in the form of a snowy-rainy mix – and that’s if the storm doesn’t change its track to miss the state entirely.

As of Wednesday morning, here’s the best guess regarding what will happen over upcoming days in Colorado from the Pueblo branch of the NWS:

• Two storm systems will bring two rounds of snow to southern Colorado from Saturday to Monday, with the heaviest snow likely to fall in the eastern San Juan Mountain region.
• Due to the warmer temperatures that are expected, accumulation will likely be limited in lower-elevation parts of the state.

And here’s what’s still up-in-the-air:

• It’s unclear how the two storm systems will interact.
• It’s unclear how much snow will fall and where, with likely travel impacts in the mountains, but impacts being less likely along I-25.
• Snow could fall in the southeast plains from Sunday night to Monday but that’s not certain.
