Optimistic outlook helped DaRon Holmes II maximize sidelined season with Denver Nuggets

DaRon Holmes II might be uniquely prepared to deal with a brutal blow from the basketball deities.

“Maybe the most positive person I’ve ever met in my life,” Nuggets Summer League coach Andrew Munson said after a Saturday’ afternoon practice on the Ball Arena practice court.

Next week, Holmes and the rest of the Nuggets’ Summer League squad will return to the court where the 6-foot-10 post player lost what was supposed to be his rookie season. The former Dayton Flyer recorded 11 points and seven rebounds in 26 minutes of playing time in his Summer League debut. Then, an awkward landing in the final five minutes of the exhibition resulted in a torn Achilles tendon in his right leg.

“Everyone’s heartbroken for the kid, and he’s like the most positive person in the room,” Munson said, reflecting on the immediate aftermath.

“He’s continued that since that happened. I’m just super excited for him to be back. He’s been phenomenal with his rehab all year, with his court work. Couldn’t be happier for him, we’re excited to see him back out there.”

Holmes said he started feeling close to 100% during Denver’s playoff run. Munson didn’t expect there to be any limitations when the Nuggets start their summer slate against Milwaukee on Thursday on the same Cox Pavilion court where the injury occurred.

“I definitely visualized that … but you have to look onward and upward. It was a tragic event that happened last year, but you can only look for the best to come in the future,” Holmes said.

“You just got to keep looking forward. That was the past. Now, it’s new beginnings.”

Third-year forward Hunter Tyson is the only other member of the 15-man roster who’s on Denver’s squad headed to Las Vegas. The uncertain situation surrounding Jonas Valanciunas’s future in Denver will lead to more eyeballs monitoring Holmes’ production. Munson said Denver will play Holmes at power forward and center.

“Anywhere they put me, I’ll be comfortable playing. I spent a lot of summertime playing the five,” Holmes said. “

“I’m comfortable with whatever. I trust what the coaches have (planned). I trust this team and organization, so I’m excited to get out there.”

What Jonas Valanciunas' reported interest in European move means for Denver Nuggets

The year watching from the sidelines allowed Holmes to put on some muscle, refine the mechanics of his shot, work closely with Denver’s medical staff during rehab and spend more time at the movie theatre. Recent favorites include “F1” and “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina,” but it’s about time for Holmes to watch some new film out there at Summer League.

“You have to start over from square one. You have to learn how to walk again and run and play. All that stuff comes with it. … I had a great environment around me last year, so I think I’m in good shape,” he said.

“It’s going to be fun. It’s going to be exciting. I’ll make some new mistakes.”
