RTD to require face masks on public transit until at least September
Though COVID-19 restrictions are beginning to fade throughout the state, the Regional Transportation District is not letting up, continuing to require face masks on its buses, trains and light rails through at least Sept. 13.
This comes after the state ended its mask mandate last week, allowing vaccinated residents to go maskless in most indoor and outdoor settings, and only suggesting that unvaccinated people continue to wear masks.
“Masks no longer being required in certain settings and environments (is) encouraging; however, face coverings must still be worn while waiting for or using public transportation,” said RTD CEO Debra Johnson.
Johnson said RTD’s mask guideline is mandated by the national Transportation Security Administration to keep its employees and customers safe.
Colorado’s executive order says that “fully vaccinated people can go without masks in public indoor spaces unless the setting requires otherwise.”
RTD customers and operators must wear masks while waiting for and while riding on the agency’s public transit. This requirement has been in place since the state mask order was issued in spring 2020.
The current TSA mask requirement initially took effect Feb. 2 and applies to buses, trains, airplanes, stations and airports nationwide.

This does not violate state guidelines as Colorado’s executive order says that “fully vaccinated people can go without masks in public indoor spaces unless the setting requires otherwise.”
Because of this, businesses and agencies such as RTD can set their own mask rules.
