Tornado watch canceled for much of metro Denver

A tornado watch was canceled Saturday night for many counties along the Front Range and eastern Plains, according to the National Weather Service Boulder.

Counties within the tornado watch included Adams, Arapahoe, Denver, Douglas, Weld, El Paso and most in the eastern Plains.

In addition to the tornado watch, there was a possibility of 2-inch — or lime size — hail to drop across the area with winds potentially reaching 70 mph, according to the NWS.

On Sunday the NWS reported nine confirmed tornadoes, all on the eastern Plains.

As a result of the weather, the Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop at Denver International Airport at 2:45 p.m.

About 30 flights were diverted to other cities such as Salt Lake City, while an additional 90 flights were delayed up to 89 minutes, said Mindy Crane, a spokeswoman for the airport.

The ground stop was lifted just before 5 p.m.

Despite the chance for severe weather, temperatures are expected to remain in the 60s.

Overnight temperatures will drop into the mid-50s with a chance of scattered showers.
