Colorado wildfire roundup: A look at 5 large fires burning across the state
As Colorado experiences a wave of record-breaking heat and dry weather, wildfires have begun to burn throughout the state. The National Weather Service issued red flag warnings until Tuesday evening in several counties, including Grand, Jackson and Summit.
Here are some of the large, active wildfires burning throughout Colorado as of 3 p.m. Monday, according to the InciWeb Incident Information System.
Muddy Slide Fire
- Size: 100 acres
- Containment: Unknown
- Location: In the Gore Range, Routt National Forest
- Cause: Unknown
The Muddy Slide Fire sparked at around 3 p.m. Sunday. A Type III Incident Command Team and numerous other resources has been ordered. As of Monday afternoon, 50 emergency responders are fighting the fire.
Oil Springs Fire
- Size: 5,000 acres
- Containment: 0%
- Location: 20 miles south of Rangely, Colo.
- Cause: Lightning
The Oil Springs Fire began burning Friday afternoon and grew by thousands of acres overnight Monday as the area experienced high winds and dry conditions. Multiple agencies are responding to the fire, however, firefighters said the trucks could not reach the blaze Sunday because of the rugged terrain of the area.
Sylvan Fire
- Size: 1,424 acres
- Containment: Unknown
- Location: 12 miles south of Eagle, Colo.
- Cause: Suspected lightning, under investigation
The Sylvan Fire was first reported at 3:15 p.m. Sunday in the White River National Forest, near Sylvan Lake State Park. As of Monday afternoon, 60 emergency responders are fighting the fire. Firefighters reported extreme fire behavior as high winds pushed the fire south and southeast Sunday and Monday.
Trail Canyon Fire
- Size: 881 acres
- Containment: 30%
- Location: 10 miles northwest of Red Mesa, Colo.
- Cause: Lightning
The Trail Canyon Fire sparked on Friday at around 5:18 p.m. As of Monday afternoon, 125 emergency responders are fighting the fire. Officials said the fire is spreading slowly, backing into Mancos Canyon and potentially wrapping back into Horse Canyon.
West Fire
- Size: 700 acres
- Containment: Unknown
- Location: Middle Mountain in the northwest corner of Moffat County
- Cause: Suspected lightning, under investigation
The Bureau of Land Management is actively engaging the West Fire using five engines, one Hot Shot crew and an array of Moffat County equipment. The fire is burning heavy lodgepole pine, and no structures are threatened as of Monday.
Multiple small wildfires under 10 acres are also currently burning in Pitkin County, Mt. Falcon Park near Morrison, northeast of De Beque and east of Snowmass.
