EMW Carpets and Furniture in Denver to close after 97 years

Denver’s EMW Carpets and Furniture store will be closing this month after operating for nearly a century.

The family-owned and operated store opened in 1923. It has been at the same location since its founding at 2141 S. Broadway.

“Though many may think the closing is due to COVID-19, quite the opposite is true,” the store’s website said. “The property was placed under contract with a developer just before the pandemic hit.”

EMW was founded by Englebert H. Wagenblast and his wife Elizabeth M. Wagenblast. The store was renamed after Elizabeth’s initials, originally called The Colorado Carpet Co.

Four generations have owned and worked in the business.

Over the decades, EMW has expanded from the front porch of a small house to a 60,000-square-foot showroom taking up nearly an entire city block. The store’s motto is “same family, same location.”

“The business has survived the depression, several recessions, the Harvard Gulch flood of 1956, a warehouse fire, a direct hit from a tornado in 1988 and now a pandemic,” the website said. “The lifeline has always been our loyal generations of customers who come back time after time.”

The store is having a closing sale until the end of October with 50% off all mattresses and accessories.
