Denver weather: More rain ahead while mountains get substantial snowfall

Tuesday was just the precursor, as forecasters predict rain and possibly thunderstorms around the Denver area on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service said to expect a high near 60 with a chance of thunderstorms after 3 p.m. Forecasters call for a 70% chance of rain. Winds are expected to be breezy with gusts of up to 22 mph.

That rain is likely to be snow up in the mountains. The weather service is predicting 3-10 inches for the area, with even more forecasted to arrive on Friday.

“Widespread snow is expected in mountains through this evening with mountain roads becoming slippery, especially over the passes,” the weather service said.

The Denver area and the surrounding plains will also be hit with a cold spell after a brief hiatus on Thursday, but forecasters deem it unlikely for the areas to see any snowfall. The National Weather Service gave Denver a 20% chance of precipitation on Friday.

Tonight, expect a cloudy evening with a low of around 38. The rain could continue as the sun sets, but should cease after 9 p.m.
