Suspect arrested for 2021 hit-and-run death

More than four years after the deadly crash, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office arrested a suspect in the 2021 unsolved hit-and-run case of 29-year-old Luis “Darnell” Loma.

On Oct. 7, 2021, Loma was hit by a gray Toyota Rav4 or similar SUV while riding his bicycle in the 2200 block of North Shields Street near Fort Collins, according to a news release

Investigators estimated that Loma was hit between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. the previous night. He was found dead next to the bicycle the morning of Oct. 7.

After the incident, LCSO went to extensive efforts to develop leads in the case, according to a news release. After years of searching and eliminating potential suspects, investigators identified a suspect in December 2025.

“LCSO conducted interviews, followed up on community tips, and ordered extensive testing on evidence to guide their efforts, but these did not produce any immediate leads,” according to the release. “The Investigations division continued working the case over the next several years, using a variety of tools and technology to identify people who may have been involved.”

Detectives narrowed their suspect list, presented evidence to a judge, and then arrested 30-year-old Nicholas Sierra on April 18 on charges of fleeing a fatal crash scene (felony), failing to aid after Loma’s death, and insurance fraud.

“Leaving a crash scene, especially one with injuries, is unacceptable. But leaving a devastated family to grieve without closure for years is absolutely unthinkable,” said Larimer County Sheriff John Feyen in the news release.

Sierra is being held on a $5,000 cash-only bond.
