Peyton Manning, Von Miller among Broncos celebrating Super Bowl 50 win
Broncos players and head coach Gary Kubiak took a look back Wednesday night at their Super Bowl 50 winning team from 10 years ago. Meanwhile, Von Miller also was looking ahead.
Miller, an outside linebacker who was the Most Valuable Player of the 24-10 win over the Carolina Panthers on Feb. 7, 2016, in Santa Clara, Calif., was the only player at the “Night of Champions” event who is still active. Miller is a free agent, and a fan yelled at the Paramount Theatre, “Bring back Von.”
“You never know,” Miller, who has openly campaigned to return to Denver, said as the crowd roared.
Wednesday’s event was put on Omaha Productions, the company owned by Hall of Fame Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. It came after the team already had a 10-year reunion in October for the 2015 Super Bowl-winning team that was put on by the Broncos.

Manning said he wanted to have the event because October’s reunion didn’t include Miller, who was then playing for the Washington Commanders. He also called it important to have a public gathering.
“It’s really a chance for the fans to kind of go behind the ropes,’’ said Manning, whose Omaha Productions had put on similar events earlier this year for the 1989 champion San Francisco 49ers and last year for the 2006 champion Indianapolis Colts, led by Manning. “When you have a team honored in the stadium, it’s not necessarily the most intimate event. … The whole point is kind of to go behind the ropes and give these fans some stories that haven’t been heard before.”
On stage in addition to Kubiak, Manning and Miller from the 2015 team were Hall of Fame outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware and stars Emmanuel Sanders at wide receiver, Aqib Talib at cornerback and T.J. Ward at safety.
The Broncos were led that season by a dominant unit that ranked first in the NFL in both scoring and total defense. Miller deflected praise about his pivotal role, calling it “an honor and a privilege” to play with both Ware and the “No Fly Zone” secondary, which included Talib and Ward.
Some of the biggest laughs came when a video from that season was shown in which Manning, with both fingers, flipped off the camera. Manning had missed six games due to a foot injury and was working out before the regular-season finale against the Chargers. The gesture meant to Kubiak that he was ready to return to the lineup in place of Brock Osweiler.
“The first video I saw (in 2015) it was only one barrel,’’ Kubiak told the audience. “I knew he was mad but he was really mad. It was his way of saying, ‘Hey dumb (guy), I’m ready to come back.’”
Osweiler started the finale against the Chargers but the Broncos were sluggish. Manning came on in the second half to lead the Broncos to a 27-10 comeback win to wrap up the No. 1 AFC seed in the playoffs. Kubiak then named Manning the starter for the playoffs.
“I’ve never said this but what I felt in that moment was the team saying, ‘Give us our guy back,’’’ Kubiak said of Denver’s sluggish play in the first half.
On stage, Manning told a funny story about how he actually was late in arriving at Empower Field because it was the only game in his career in which he dressed out and didn’t start and he didn’t think he would play. So he visited his wife and kids before the game and then got on I-25 before he realized he was driving the wrong direction.

“The Omaha team really digs deeper than I thought was possible,’’ Manning, who was then playing his final NFL season, said before the event. “They actually found the footage of the flipping of the bird. … I didn’t know they were going to dig that deep. It was a unique season for me with some injuries and certainly not knowing how it was going to turn out at the end. … It’s been fun to put this program together going down memory lane.”
Before the event, Manning touched on a number of subjects. He called the Broncos acquiring wide receiver Jayden Waddle from Miami last month “a great pickup.” He said earlier this month at The Masters he saw Broncos quarterback Bo Nix, who suffered a broken right ankle in a Jan. 17 divisional playoff game against Buffalo. Nix didn’t play in the 10-7 loss to New England in the AFC Championship Game on Jan. 25.
“He looked good, sounds good, sounds upbeat,’’ Manning said. “Looking forward to getting started.”
Manning said the NFL “reached out to me” to “maybe encourage” Fernando Mendoza “to go to the draft.” Mendoza, the expected top pick by Las Vegas when the draft gets underway Thursday night in Pittsburgh, will instead spend the night with his family in Miami.
“(That) would be fine, but it is special to be there,’’ said Manning, who attended the event when he was the No. 1 pick in the 1998 draft in New York.
On stage Wednesday, Manning and others paid tribute to Demaryius Thomas, the star wide receiver from the team who died in 2021. Miller said Thomas is “up in heaven” looking down.
Those in attendance were treated to highlights of the regular season, playoff wins of 23-16 over Pittsburgh in the divisional round, 20-18 over New England in the AFC Championship Game and the Super Bowl. Footage was shown of Miller and Ware giving Kubiak a Gatorade bath after the win over the Panthers.
“These guys will be world champions the rest of their lives,’’ Kubiak said while the crowd cheered.
The event ended with those from the 2015 team being showered with confetti while the Vince Lombardi Trophy was held up. The crowd chanted, “MVP, MVP” to Miller, whom some hope to see return to the Broncos.
