Broncos sign Sean Payton to a five-year contract extension through 2030 season
ENGLEWOOD — Sean Payton is not leaving Denver anytime soon.
The Broncos and their head coach agreed to a new five-year contract, the team said Thursday, on a deal that runs through the 2030 season.
“I’m thankful they want me back,” Payton said following organized team activities at Broncos Park. “We’ll do everything we can to continue to keep winning.”
Payton, 62, led a franchise turnaround over the last three seasons. He went 32-19 over that span with two postseason appearances. Last season, the Broncos won the AFC West for the first time in a decade and reached the conference championship game. Payton’s initial contract with the team ran through the 2027 season.
“Sean Payton has led an impressive turnaround over the past three seasons, instilling a winning culture and high expectations,” Broncos owner and CEO Greg Penner said in a news release. “I appreciate the close partnership he shares with George Paton along with the alignment and stability across our football operations. We’re thrilled for Sean to continue leading our team as head coach, building on our progress during such an exciting time for the Broncos.”

In May, the Broncos also signed general manager George Paton to a new five-year contract that runs through the 2030 season. His partnership with Payton will now help shape the Broncos into their foreseeable future.
“Most importantly, aligning with George and the working relationship,” Payton said. “We enjoy coming to work together and going through this together. I think we think a lot alike.”
The Broncos have signed multiple players to long-term contract extensions under Paton and Payton’s leadership. That includes defensive end Zach Allen (four years, $102 million). He reacted to Payton’s new contract after practice on Thursday.
“It’s huge,” Allen said. “What he’s done here has been incredible. A lot of us signed extensions and a big reason why was because of him. So, it’s fully deserved and we’re really happy for him. To have him still here is great.”
Payton is among the most accomplished NFL head coaches today. He won Super Bowl XLIV with the Saints. His 184 career regular-season wins rank 12th in NFL history and second among active coaches behind only the Chiefs’ Andy Reid (279). So, how much longer does Payton plan on coaching?
He joked: “Well, five years.”
Payton then looked ahead at his future with the Broncos.
“I haven’t really given any thought to the endgame,” Payton said. “I think I have a lot of juice left and enjoy what we’re doing. Someone asked the other day: Do you enjoy it? I think when that stops is when you have to look at (retiring). I’m not at that spot right now.”
