CSP looking for witnesses after serious crash in scenic Colorado canyon
Colorado State Patrol is asking the public for information about a serious two-vehicle crash that took place along a scenic drive located just west of Cañon City.
According to a press release on the matter, the incident took place on Highway 50 in Bighorn Sheep Canyon at mile marker 262 at about 1:20 p.m. on June 15. The preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of a white 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 started passing vehicles while traveling eastbound in a place where doing so was legal. That said, when the driver entered a no-passing zone, he allegedly continued to make passes on the winding road.
Eventually, the driver of the truck reportedly struck a westbound 2024 Jeep Wrangler head-on.
The 43-year-old male driver of the Wrangler and a 50-year-old female passenger were both taken to a local area hospital with serious injuries. The 18-year-old male driver of the Silverado was also transported to a hospital, but with minor injuries. The 18-year-old male was ultimately arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular assault and reckless driving.
At this time, Colorado State Patrol is asking the public to speak up if they witnessed the crash or to share any dashboard camera footage that may have been captured of the incident. They’re not just asking for witnesses or footage of the crash either – they’re also asking for witness accounts or footage that may be related to how either driver was traveling prior to the crash. Anyone with information can reach Colorado State Patrol Dispatch at 719-544-2424. The case reference number is VC260186.
All suspects are to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law and all charges are merely accusations.
