Wildfire destroys home, prompts evacuations in western Colorado

A wildfire that started on June 23 that’s burning south of Rifle, Colorado has prompted mandatory evacuations and has already destroyed one home.

According to Colorado River Fire Rescue, the Dry Creek Fire was about 315 acres in size per a Wednesday morning report, up from the 288 acres reported yesterday. Crews were initially dispatched to the scene of 899 Gage Road at about 3:20 p.m. on June 23 to respond to a brush fire that was spreading toward a residence.

Per an evening report on June 23, one residence and one outbuilding were destroyed by the blaze. A mandatory evacuation order remains underway for part of the area (find additional detail related to those evacuation orders here).

June 24 is expected to bring extreme fire behavior conditions and strong winds that could test an established fire line. At last report, the focus of firefighting crews included suppression, slowing the fire’s spread, and constructing containment lines.

At time of reporting, the cause of the fire remained under investigation.
