More than half of Colorado is under red-flag fire warnings as wildfires rage
As emergency responders battle a series of wildfires across Colorado, warm and dry weather conditions have more than half the state under red-flag fire warnings Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
Conditions are not expected to change much during the week, with forecast high temperatures in the up 80s for Colorado Springs, lower 90s for Denver and upper 90s for Pueblo, where on Thursday the thermometer is expected to hit 100.
Custer County (Aspen Acres fire)
The National Weather Service is calling for wind gusts as high as 40 mph on Monday, forcing emergency officials to cancel air support for crews fighting the Aspen Acres fire. The blaze has grown to more than 23,100 acres as of 5 p.m.
Ouray County (Gold Mountain fire)
In Ouray County, where crews are battling the 7,100-acre Gold Mountain fire, conditions will be sunny with widespread smoke, a high near 75 degrees, and wind gusts as high as 25 mph.
Fremont County (11 fire)
Sunny with patchy smoke. Highs of 84-95 degrees. Wind speeds of 15-30 mph, with gusts reaching 40 mph. The fire grew to 102 acres.
Lake County (Willow fire)
Leadville and surrounding areas are under red flag fire warnings on Monday and Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. The highs on both days are expected to be in the mid-60s. Wind gusts could be as high as 40 mph on Monday. The Willow fire has grown to 1,200 acres as of Monday afternoon.
Dolores County (Ferris fire)
In the southwest region of the state, where crews are fighting the 15,000-acre Ferris fire, wind gusts of 30 mph and widespread smoke are expected. Otherwise, conditions should be sunny, with a high of 68 degrees.
Mesa County (Snyder Mesa fire)
Much of the county will be sunny and smoky, with highs in the low 80s, according to the Weather Service in Grand Junction.
In Colorado Springs, conditions are expected to be sunny, with a high near 90. The area is under red flag fire warning on Monday and Tuesday.
