Teen driver dies after June crash in Aurora

A 17-year-old driver who was critically injured in a two-vehicle crash June 28 at South Havana Street and East Alameda Avenue has died, Aurora police said.

The crash occurred about 4:22 a.m. June 28, roughly 10 minutes after Aurora patrol officers located a suspected stolen Volkswagen near East Mississippi Avenue and East Alameda Parkway.

Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver did not stop. Police authorized a brief pursuit that lasted about one minute before it was terminated because of the vehicle’s excessive speed and the driver’s behavior.

According to investigators, the Volkswagen was traveling west on Alameda Parkway when the 17-year-old driver ran a red light at South Havana Street and collided with a Subaru in the intersection.

The Jetta caught fire immediately after the crash. Officers who had attempted the earlier traffic stop extinguished the flames.

The 17-year-old driver and a 23-year-old male passenger in the Jetta were taken to local hospitals with life-threatening injuries. The 17-year-old driver died Monday from injuries sustained in the crash. His identity will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.

The passenger remains hospitalized.

The driver of the Subaru, a 28-year-old Aurora man, was also taken to a hospital. He was treated and released.

Police said the investigation remains active and ongoing.
