Former CU Buffs star Justin Biwer ties TPC Colorado course record, earns Korn Ferry Tour start
BERTHOUD — The final round of The Blue Championship was special for Justin Biwer.
The former Colorado Buffaloes star fired a course-record-tying 63 to vault up the leaderboard and finish in a tie for fifth at the Korn Ferry event.
“I’ve played here a bunch and I’ve shot some good rounds, but I’ve never shot 63 before,” Biwer said after his Sunday round at TPC Colorado in Berthoud. “That felt really good. I felt good from the start. Really calm all day and I played a super solid back nine to shoot 6-under par there. Everything was clicking all day.”
Tying the course record was not the only good part of Biwer’s Sunday.
With the finish, he earned another Korn Ferry Tour start, which will be at the Evans Scholars Invitational in Illinois on July 23-26. Biwer currently plays on the PGA Tour Americas.
“I’ve got a couple Americas events coming up, so I’ve obviously got to sacrifice one of those,” he said. “But I think it’s much more worth my time to play in these events than it is those. Just try to take those opportunities as much as I can.”
The 24-year-old has played well on the PGA Tour Americas this season. He has made six of seven cuts and has two top 10s, which includes a top 5 at the Inter Rapidisimo Golf Championship. He is CU’s all-time leader in stroke average and holds 29 school records.
He started his round with a front-nine 32 before taking off on the back. He shot 30 with four birdies and one eagle. His last birdie came on the 18th hole, which has been giving players fits all week.
“Just had a good, confident swing and had about 193 in,” Biwer said about the 18th hole. “It was a pretty accessible pin, especially from my ball flight. Just hit a smooth 8-iron to about 10 or 11 feet.”
Biwer was a Monday qualifier for The Blue Championship and is very familiar with TPC Colorado as the Buffs play there regularly. He had plenty of support from the Berthoud crowds.
“This whole week has been super special, so to just keep like adding things onto it, it’s just made it more and more special just because of that,” Biwer said about tying the course record at TPC Colorado. “I’m super pumped for that, for sure.”
