The Rockies’ good, bad and ugly as Hunter Goodman enters All-Star Game | Kevin’s take

Relative to the low expectations outside the organization, the Rockies’ season so far has been a mixed bag.

It adds a highlight when catcher Hunter Goodman plays in Tuesday’s All-Star Game in Philadelphia.

Make no mistake: Goodman deserved to be Colorado’s representative at the Midsummer Classic. The 26-year-old catcher earned the right to his spot on the National League roster, pounding 27 home runs and posting an OPS+ of 121 through his first 90 games.

It would have been just, however, for Goodman to be a part of Monday’s Home Run Derby, showcasing the best sluggers that Major League Baseball has to offer. Goodman’s 27 homers are the second most of any NL hitter and the sixth most in baseball. It was clear Goodman wanted a spot in the Derby.

Kyle Schwarber leads all hitters with 32 long balls, while teammate Bryce Harper was selected despite having seven fewer homers than Goodman. But MLB chose eight players over Goodman, including a pair from the host Philadelphia Phillies.

Snub aside, Goodman’s progression this season has been one of the bright spots for the 39-59 Rockies, who must win 24 of their final 64 games to finish with fewer than 100 losses this season for the first time since 2022.

What else has been good, bad and ugly for the Rockies this season?

Good

Jake McCarthy — Acquired in the offseason in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks, McCarthy and his speed have become a true weapon in Colorado, slashing .301/.347/.516 through his first 83 games. He’s under team control through the 2028 season and has shown he could be a building block for the Rockies in the outfield — if Colorado keeps him past the Aug. 3 trade deadline.

TJ Rumfield — Another offseason acquisition, Rumfield has been everything the Rockies could want at first base from an offensive and defensive perspective. He’s starting to earn well-deserved buzz for NL Rookie of the Year honors after winning the last two NL monthly rookie awards. His 99 hits are the most of any rookie.

Rockies rallies — Colorado’s 133 runs in the eighth inning or later are the most by any MLB team prior to the All-Star break since 1974. Manager Warren Schaeffer will often say that his team never quits, and the Rockies’ ability to score late shows proof that they will fight to the last out.

Bad

The bullpen — Here’s a glass half-full or half-empty question: Is this bullpen the one that finished the first half with a combined 4.93 ERA (26th among MLB’s 30 franchises) or the one that entered Sunday with a 1.85 ERA in July, the lowest of any MLB team during that stretch? It’s been a solid few days, but can the Rockies repeat that after the break? Arm fatigue and what the bullpen looks like after the trade deadline may answer that question.

Second base — Edouard Julien and Willi Castro have combined for minus 7 Outs Above Average at the position while getting the bulk of the innings there. (On the active roster, only Tyler Freeman has additional innings at second base with 46.0 in 10 games.) This is a position that must improve at the plate and in the field in the second half.

Ezequiel Tovar — Is he still the answer at shortstop? Through his first 92 games, he’s hitting just .200 and is third on the team (behind Goodman and Castro) with 86 strikeouts. His OPS+ of 49 would be a career low and another stairstep down from the 100 posted in 2024 and 83 posted in 2025.

Ugly

Brenton Doyle and Jordan Beck — Doyle was in center field on Opening Day while Beck manned right field. Now neither is in the lineup. (Doyle is still recovering from an oblique issue while Beck is playing in Triple-A.) And their future with the team is a collective question mark. Doyle’s defense in center field was always his calling card, but Cole Carrigg has shown to be a capable defender in his absence. In a crowded outfield, is there room for one or both?

The rotation — Colorado’s 5.90 ERA is the highest of any team, and surgery for Chase Dollander put a damper on the near-term outlook for the group. The 451.1 innings thrown by Colorado starters is the sixth-fewest in MLB and the .297 batting average against is by far the highest of any team. The Athletics are 29th at .269.

Winning against the NL West — At the All-Star Game break, Colorado is 11-23 against teams in its own division. If the Rockies are going to climb out of the NL West cellar, they must start winning against the teams they are trying to hurdle.
