Aurora to honor theater shooting victims in annual Day of Resilience festival

Aurora holds its annual Day of Resilience on July 25 to honor those killed in the 2012 theater mass shooting, bringing people together with art, activities and a 5K run.

The free event, which will happen at Aurora’s Water-Wise Garden, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway, from 7:30 a.m. to noon, brings together survivors, families, first responders and community members for a day of “remembrance, wellness and unity,” according to a news release.

It’s been 14 years since a gunman opened fire in a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” at the Century 16 Theater on July 20, 2012. Twelve lives were lost, 70 other people were injured but survived and the lives of countless others were upended.

Those who died that day were: Jonathan Blunk, 26; Alexander J. Boik, 18; Jesse Childress, 29; Gordon Cowden, 51; Jessica Ghawi (also went by Jessica Redfield), 24; John Larimer, 27; Matt McQuinn, 27; Micayla Medek, 23; Veronica Moser-Sullivan, 6; Alex Sullivan, 27; Alexander C. Teves, 24 and Rebecca Wingo, 32.

The 7/20 Memorial Foundation has held the annual Day of Resilience for 11 years.

It kicks off at 7:30 a.m. with the Hero’s Journey 5K and Kids Run, led by shooting survivor and firefighter Zack Golditch, according to a news release from the foundation.

Registration for the run/walk ranges from $12 to $40 and proceeds go to the Zack Golditch Opportunity Scholarship, which helps Aurora Public Schools student athletes pursue higher education.

From 8 a.m. to noon, the festival will have professional chalk artists creating live murals, a wellness fair with trauma resources, therapy dogs and community organizations, local food vendors, beer tasting for people 21 and older, live music and family-friendly activities.

Heather Dearman, the CEO of the 7/20 Foundation, said the event is all about making space for connection.

“It is intentionally designed to remind people that healing looks different for everyone, and that no one has to walk that journey alone,” Dearman said in the release.

More information about the 2026 festival is available on the foundation’s website.
