A moose reportedly injured a woman who was hiking on Forest Service Road 505 trail in the Nederland area, according to a report from local news source Daily Camera.

Per the Daily Camera report, the moose was reportedly “spooked” by the 67-year-old hiker, believed to have charged the woman before causing a minor injury that resulted in the woman being transported to the hospital. The attack took place on Monday morning, with first responders heading to the scene around 11:23 a.m.

This incident provides a good example of how unpredictable Colorado’s wildlife can be, with moose, in particular, having a tendency to lash out when surprised or feeling threatened.

Hikers in Colorado should stay aware and keep an eye out for moose. In the event that a moose charges, seek to put a large object – a rock, tree, or vehicle, for example – between yourself and the animal, as this can help to thwart an attack.
