3 rescued from Arapahoe County missile silo charged with trespassing

Three people who climbed into an underground missile silo in Arapahoe County were charged with criminal trespassing, the sheriff’s office said Thursday.

Arapahoe County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the incident around 6 a.m. on July 8 after getting a call about a young woman trapped in a silo.

Two juveniles told deputies they climbed down a rope ladder and their friend, an 18-year-old woman, could not get back up.

South Metro Fire Rescue and Sable Altura Fire Rescue crews got her out and took her to a hospital for exposure to high levels of carbon dioxide, according to an ACSO post on Facebook.

The three teenagers ignored the posted “no trespassing” signs and are charged with second-degree criminal trespass on property owned by the City and County of Denver and managed by Waste Management.

The adult got a criminal citation and the two juveniles’ cases were filed with the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office juvenile justice system.

A second-degree criminal trespass citation requires a court appearance and penalties can include up to 10 days in jail and/or a $300 fee.

Days later, on July 14, deputies rescued another person from a missile silo, according to a Facebook post.

Deputies saw two vehicles parked near the gate of a restricted property just after midnight and heard voices from an underground shaft.

They found a 19-year-old man and 28-year-old woman about 60 feet down in the silo. The man climbed out on a rope ladder, but Sable Altura Fire responded to help rescue the woman. Neither was injured.

Both were issued second-degree criminal trespass summonses.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office asked people to respect gates and posted signs and avoid entering confined spaces.

“Restricted properties and underground confined spaces, like this missile silo, are extremely dangerous,” the department said on Facebook. “Hidden hazards, unstable conditions, toxic gases and deep vertical shafts can quickly turn exploration into a life-threatening emergency.”
