The case involving Broncos outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper will extend beyond the preseason.

Cooper, facing a felony charge of domestic violence, appeared Friday morning at a Douglas County virtual deposition hearing. An arraignment was set for Aug. 31 at 1:30 p.m. before Judge Daniel W. Warhola at the court.

That is three days after the Broncos conclude the preseason at home Aug. 28 against Minnesota and two weeks before they begin the regular season Sept. 14 at Kansas City.

At the arraignment, charges against Cooper will be read and a plea entered. It remains to be seen when a trial date might be set. But any trial could be deep into the regular season, if not after it.

Cooper was arrested June 4 and again June 11 for an alleged incident in which he choked his ex-girlfriend and pinned her against the wall on June 4. He allegedly violated a restraining order following his initial arrest by showing up at her apartment and knocking repeatedly on the door and also calling and texting.

Cooper faces misdemeanor charges of harassment and violation of a protection order in addition to a felony charge of domestic violence.

Cooper was excused from practices at a Broncos mandatory minicamp on June 16 and 17 to attend to his legal issues. Denver veterans are scheduled to report to training camp on Tuesday at Broncos Park.

Friday’s virtual hearing lasted about 2 ½ minutes. Cooper was represented by his attorney, Harvey Steinberg. Steinberg did not return messages left after the hearing.

Cooper was asked if he was present by Judge Kelly Waidler, and he responded, “Yes, good morning, your honor.” That was all he said during the hearing.

Cooper has been with the Broncos since being a seventh-round pick out of Ohio State in 2021. He has been a regular starter the past three seasons, which has included having 27 sacks while playing in all 51 games. He signed a four-year, $54 million contract extension in 2024 that runs through 2028.
