Denver PrideFest slated for weekend amid funding loss

The Denver PrideFest will take over Civic Center Park downtown this weekend and organizers estimate it will attract more than 500,000 people.

The festival is one of three main events slated for this year’s Denver Pride weekend, which will also feature a parade and a 5K run, according to the organization’s website

This year, Denver Pride is expected to lose sponsorship funds of $230,000.

The decrease, first reported in April, comes amid a national rollback in of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and companies shifting their budget priorities, The Center on Colfax, which produces Denver Pride, said in a statement last week.

In a statement, Natalie Zanoni, COO of The Center, said 83% of all contributions are used in free programs the group offers to LGBTQ+ individuals.

“The decrease in funding we are experiencing puts these critical services at risk, such as mental health support, programming for our trans and gender diverse community, youth, older adults, and more,” Zanoni said.

The group said it worked with community members to lessen the funding gap but would not confirm exactly by how much. Some organizations did not withdraw their funding entirely and are still sponsoring the event, just at a lower level than in previous years, the group added.

The group declined a request for an interview about sponsorship loss, saying that the staff “did not have the capacity,” as Denver Pride approaches. The group did not respond to follow-up questions.

While the organization declined to name the specific companies that changed their sponsorship amount or withdrew entirely, its website shows that the top-level donors decreased from 16 last year to 11 this year, according to Axios. Additionally, companies including Nissan, Target, Verizon and Walmart no longer appear on the organization’s website.
