Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that states attempting to thwart the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement efforts to deport people in the country illegally are risking to “forfeit the funding” from his department.

Duffy’s declaration followed President Donald Trump’s announcement calling for expanded ICE raids throughout sanctuary cities, including New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

“The @USDOT will NOT fund rogue state actors who refuse to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement,” Duffy wrote on X, in a post that reshared Trump’s original announcement. “And to cities that stand by while rioters destroy transportation infrastructure — don’t expect a red cent from DOT, either. Follow the law, or forfeit the funding.”

Duffy has not been shy about withholding government money. The secretary previously threatened to withhold federal funding from New York City in an attempt to hold officials “accountable” for the “unacceptable” state of the prominent mode of transportation after Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) tried to implement congestion pricing for people driving into Manhattan.

While Trump named those cities, more are likely on the chopping block. Govs. Tim Walz (D-MN), JB Pritzker (D-IL), and Hochul appeared before the House Oversight Committee on Oversight and Reform last week. The panel of governors defended their sanctuary policies regarding illegal immigrants. All three governors will be up for reelection next year.

Delaney Hall Detention Facility in Newark, New Jersey, has recently seen several protests. Police arrested Newark Mayor Ras Baraka outside the center last month. However, charges against him were dropped.

Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell is facing a congressional investigation to determine whether he was involved in “aiding and abetting illegal immigration.” The mayor largely dismissed the allegations, saying, “I don’t have any reason to be concerned.” ICE is still cooperating with local law enforcement in the area to arrest illegal immigrants with criminal records and gang affiliations.
