Boulder mosque launches national victims’ family fund

The Islamic Center of Boulder, one of the largest mosques in the city, rallied its members and decided Tuesday to help the victims’ families with a national campaign, said member Kelly El-Yacoubi.
“We want to show support in this time of tragedy,” El-Yacoubi said Wednesday.
The ICB teamed with LaunchGood.com — similar to a GoFundMe, but for Muslims — and CelebrateMercy, a nonprofit educational group to teach about the Prophet Muhammad, to launch “Muslims unite for Boulder families.”
The fund has raised more than $16,000 in two days. Beneficiaries will be victims’ families and caregivers.
“We wish to respond to evil with good, as our faith instructs us, and send a powerful message of compassion through action,” according to the campaign website.
“One thing I can say is that Boulder is a family,” El-Yacoubi said. “Anyone from Boulder, or who has ever lived there, there’s a true sense of camaraderie with each other.
“This mosque and the shooting are no different. These lives lost were a loss for Muslims as much as any other Boulder person. We are grieving for the loss of those family members.”
El-Yacoubi said someone from the community dropped off a card expressing support and solidarity, and offered to escort any mosque members on walks or to the store “if they feel vulnerable.”
“No one should be on the receiving end of hate,” she said. “The Muslim community has been there, the Asian American community has been there … What (the shooting suspect) did is the direct opposite of everything our religion teaches us, which is compassion and mercy.”
