The Birdseye fire in Peyton was 100% contained Sunday morning and fire officials announced residents could return home later in the day. 

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office announced on Twitter residents can return home at noon.

The fire started in a house and spread to the surrounding landscape, fire officials said earlier. The blaze destroyed the home that it started in and forced evacuations in the Birdseye View area Friday.

Peyton Fire Chief Jeffery Turner said the fire had burned about 24 acres after taking off about 12:30 p.m. Friday, he said. When he arrived at 12:57 p.m. it had already crossed the road, he said. 

The three helicopters and two single engine planes that responded to the fire were critical to containing it, he said. In addition, more than 200 people from numerous agencies responded to the fire, the sheriff’s office said Saturday. 

“We called every cavalry asset we could to get this under control,” Turner said. 

Higher relative humidity helped slow the fire overnight on Friday and the fire was 90% contained on Saturday.
