Denver cardiologist found guilty on 35 counts of sexual assault

A jury on Tuesday found a Denver cardiologist guilty on almost all of the sexual assault counts that were leveled against him in a weeks-long trial.

Of 38 sexual assault-related charges Stephen Matthews faced, the jury found him guilty of all but three. On those, the jury returned not guilty verdicts.

Prosecutors said that there was a clear pattern of Matthews drugging women after meeting them on dating apps, sexually assaulting them and then “gaslighting” them afterward.

His defense argued the case largely relied on “stories.”

Jurors started deliberating Thursday afternoon around 2:45 p.m. and reached agreements on verdicts just before 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Matthews, 37, worked out of St. Anthony North as a cardiologist. His trial began on July 15 in Denver District Court. In their closing arguments Thursday morning, prosecutors painted Matthews as someone who was calculated and carefully targeted his victims. His defense team said prosecutors relied on “stories” about “voluntary drinking on first dates” and not actual evidence.

Defense attorneys said that the victims’ stories were inconsistent and there was no proof except witness reports.

Matthews was arrested in March of last year after a woman reported he assaulted her after they went to brunch. After her story was made public, nine additional women came forward to report they were victimized by Matthews. Denver prosecutors said that the assaults happened between 2019 and 2023.

Matthews will be sentenced in Denver District Court on Oct. 25.
