ENGLEWOOD — Tight end Lucas Krull is rounding his game this Broncos training camp with help from the offensive line.
Krull enters his second season in Denver and third in the NFL with the physical tools to excel as a pass catcher. He hauled in 48 career college receptions for 565 yards and six touchdowns over four seasons between Florida (2018-19) and Pittsburgh (2020-21). Krull averaged 11.9 yards per catch last season in Denver and scored his first NFL touchdown in Week 16 against the Patriots.
The next step in his football evolution is becoming a more effective blocker at 6-foot-6 and 260 pounds.
“It’s no secret that it’s a huge part of my game that I’m trying to work on and improve. The biggest thing is every day out here getting repetition,” Krull said. “I have to go against (outside linebacker Jonathan Cooper) and all these guys on our edge. They can set it unbelievably well. So, for me to get to go battle these guys every single day just gives me that chance to get better.”
That’s why Krull seeks the help of teammates like starting right tackle Mike McGlinchey.
“I struggled (with) some of my pass-set stuff today. Mike pulled me across and gave me some pointers,” Krull said. “It’s awesome to have those kinds of guys in line with you. Just being able to help coach you up and give you these pointers to be better every day. … It’s amazing. All those linemen, they do a great job of their own craft but also being able to reach out and help us tight ends on the line as well.”
In 2022, Broncos tight end Adam Trautman was Saints teammates with Krull. Trautman witnessed notable growth from Krull since his rookie season in New Orleans.
“Now, it’s way different,” Trautman said. “He knows exactly what he’s seeing, and he knows what he’s doing. He’s willing in the run game now to put his head in there and everything, which is huge. He’s progressed.”
Krull also reminded fans Tuesday at training camp of his receiving talent. He hauled in a long touchdown reception from Jarett Stidham to open a 7-on-7 period. Krull celebrated with a roar and teammate chest bump.
“It’s camp. You have to have fun with it. You have to bring the energy every day,” Krull said. “That’s something that I’m real passionate about. I love this game. … So, when I get the opportunity to celebrate, I’m going to make the most of it.”
