USC quarterback Caleb Williams looks part of No.1 pick against Colorado

BOULDER – The Folsom Field faithful didn’t like what they saw from Southern California quarterback Caleb Williams, but Broncos fans did.

In the Trojans’ 48-41 win over the Buffaloes on Saturday, last season’s Heisman Trophy recipient, looked like a worthy No. 1 overall pick. Williams completed 30 of 40 passes for 403 yards and six touchdowns against one interception. The six touchdowns match the Folsom Field record shared by Matt Barkley, another Trojan.

“The kid always plays that way. I haven’t seen him play badly,” Colorado coach Deion Sanders said postgame. “He had some throws that I’m sure he would want back, but that kid is a flat-out baller. He is a difference-maker. He makes them better. It was a pleasure for me to play against him and their head coach. That was fun for me.”

The 30 scouts representing 21 different NFL teams, according to ESPN, also had a fun afternoon watching Williams and Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders go head-to-head. Broncos general manager George Paton watched closely as Williams warmed up prior to the game.

Williams was at his best in the first half. On USC’s first drive, the quarterback picked up a block that helped clear the way on MarShawn Lloyd’s touchdown run that opened the scoring in the first three minutes. Two of his three first-half incompletions came on USC’s second drive, but he bounced back with his best play of the day on the Trojans’ third drive.

After dropping back and looking to his right, Williams rolled to the left and threw a deep ball while on the move. More than seven seconds passed before Williams decided to throw. Tahj Washington adjusted to make the catch and raced to the end zone for a 71-yard score that will likely be a part of Williams’ highlight reel during the Heisman Trophy ceremony.

“Just seeing him roll out of the pocket and trying to find that green grass that’s unoccupied, he found me right there,” Washington said.

On the first play of the second quarter, Williams hit Dorian Singer off of play action to make it 21-0. A couple of possessions later, the presumptive No. 1 pick fired a laser to Mario Williams that split the Colorado safeties for a 24-yard touchdown. Williams’ fourth passing touchdown of the first half was an out route to former Buff Brenden Rice, who broke a tackle and scored from 26 yards out.

“It won’t be until he leaves that people will really realize the greatness that they’re watching and what they really get to come out here and see every single day,” Rice said.

A streak of 17 straight completions from Williams ended early in the third quarter, but he bounced back by hitting Rice on a quick slant for their second touchdown connection of the day, giving the visitors a 41-14 lead in the middle of the third quarter. The final touchdown of Williams’ day went to tight end Jude Wolfe from three yards out.

The first interception Williams threw this season provided some proof of the USC quarterback’s humanity. Buffaloes cornerback Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig picked off an underthrown deep ball in the final minute of the third quarter, sparking a the Buffaloes’ 21 unanswered points to close the game.

“I didn’t get my legs under it,” Williams explained. “Should’ve got my legs under it, had enough time to do so.”

That was about the only negative part from Williams’ first football trip to Colorado.

“They brought a lot of energy to Colorado, and it was great,” Williams said. “It was fun.”

Entering Sunday, the Broncos are one of four NFL teams without a win. A loss to the Bears on Sunday in Chicago would improve Denver’s chances at the first overall pick, which would likely be used to bring Williams back to Colorado.
