Fourth wolf dies from group of 15 released in Colorado in January
Colorado Parks and Wildlife has notified the public that another one of the recently reintroduced wolves has died.
According to their report, a mortality alert was received for a female gray wolf on May 15. The wolf, dubbed 2512-BC, was part of the group that was brought to the state from British Columbia earlier this year.
Information about the wolf’s cause of death was not released, with a necropsy set to officially determine what killed the wolf.
This is the fourth wolf of the group translocated from Canada in January to have died. The 15 wolves of this group were released into Pitkin and Eagle counties, having since expanded their terrain.
It is now believed that there are between 24 and 26 wolves in Colorado, though Colorado Parks and Wildlife also noted that it’s monitoring up to four potential dens. If each den produces a litter of four to six pups per norm, it could mean that another 16 to 24 wolves are on the way.
