[VIDEO] Moose charges hiker as wildlife encounter quickly escalates in Colorado

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) recently shared video of a bull moose charging a hiker who came too close to the wild animal in Clear Creek County. The hiker walked up on the bull moose “by chance” near willows and a lake, according to officials.

In the short clip, the moose seems peaceful, though feet away from the hiker. Seconds later, that changes fast.

“This video is an example of being too close to a bull moose and how quickly they can decide to charge on you,” CPW said in a tweet that urged caution among hikers.

Thankfully, no injuries occurred in the attack.

The hiker managed to get behind a tree that the angry moose ending up colliding with, according to officials.

In this case, it sounds like the hiker happened to spot the moose while minding their own business on the trail. Either way, it was a bad idea to linger. If one encounters an animal by surprise, they should remove themselves from the situation immediately so as not to interfere with the animal. This charge could probably have been prevented had the person not stuck around to film.

Never attempt to approach, feed, lure, or pet a moose. Keep a safe distance and if the moose seems interested, back away while keeping an eye on the animal. If it charges, try to put a rock or tree in the way of the moose.

An adult moose can weigh upward of 1,200 pounds and have a hoof-to-shoulder height of six feet. Due to their massive size, moose are considered one of the most dangerous wild animals in the state.

Editor’s Note: Keep wildlife WILD. Remember to take photographs from a safe distance, keep pets leashed, and never approach a moose or any other wild animal you may encounter. Signs of aggression include laid back ears, raised hairs on the neck, and licking of the snout. If charged by a moose, run and hide behind a tree or rock.
