[VIDEO] Massive ‘gustnado’ caught on camera crossing highway in Colorado, multiple tornados touch down
South Metro Fire Rescue Public Information Officer Eric Hurst captured footage of a tornado during the spring storm that rolled through Colorado on Monday, believed to be one of the first tornadoes to touch down in Colorado this year.
Hurst first published footage of the storm touching down southwest of Kit Carson at about 4 PM.

After publishing a first video of the landspout tornado, Hurst continued to live tweet the weather events as they unfolded. Several minutes later he reported a second landspout and at about 4:30 PM he reported that all landspouts had dissipated in the area.

Hurst soon took to Twitter again to show footage of what he describes as a ‘gustnado’ crossing Highway 40 east of Kit Carson. A gustnado varies from a tornado in that it is a shallow surface-based vortex, not one connected to a cloud as a tornado is.

Colorado’s tornado season typically starts in April and lasts through August with around 50 tornados touching down each year.
According to CBS Denver, Monday’s tornadoes were the first of the season. In addition to those captured by Hurst, another tornado occurred in Lincoln County and multiple others were reported in Cheyenne County, home to Kit Carson.
