Two Colorado cities rank in top 20 best places to live in U.S.

Town of Parker

Parker placed second in the county and Broomfield was 18th in Money’s 2020 Best Places to Live ranking released Tuesday.

Parker trailed only Evans, Georgia. The rest of the top 10 are Meridian, Ohio; Rockwall, Texas; Columbia, Maryland; Westfield, Indiana; Syracuse, Utah; Franklin, Tennessee; Woodbury, Minnesota; and Morrisville, North Carolina.

In placing Parker second, the report pointed to the city’s strong community, close proximity to wildlife and beautiful views.

“That gorgeous natural setting, combined with spillover from Denver’s tech- and natural resource-driven economy helped fast-growing Parker score top marks in two of our major data categories this year: Economy and Income and Health and Safety,” the report said.

Broomfield’s top 20 spot was secured by its strong job market and affordable housing compared to nearby Denver and Boulder, the report said. The report also praised the city’s parks, trail systems and green spaces.

Money evaluated 1,890 U.S. locations to create a top 50 list. The 1,890 finalists were chosen after removing all cities and towns with populations of less than 25,000, more than double the national crime risk, little to no ethnic diversity and a median income level lower than 85% of the state’s median.

The remaining locations were compared using data on numerous factors such as economy, housing market, education, health, diversity and weather.

This year, additional considerations were made regarding the handling of COVID-19. Money evaluated the locations’ unemployment rates and housing distress during the pandemic.

Among the top 10 cities, Parker had the highest June unemployment rate at 8.7% and was tied with Columbia for the highest median household income at $114,000.

Parker also had the second-highest median home price at $486,000, beaten only by Franklin’s $495,000.

Parker’s median home price and population were nearly double those of the winning city, Evans, despite similar median household incomes.
