Colorado-Utah luxury passenger train derails after collision with oil tanker

Authorities on Wednesday are investigating after a luxury passenger train collided with a semi-tanker truck, spilling thousands of gallons of oil and derailing the train.

Colorado State Patrol officers arrived on scene around 9:40 a.m. at an area on Highway 6 near Mile Pond Road where the tanker truck had been split open due to the crash. The spill released an estimated 6,000 gallons of road oil onto the ground, according to a press release from the Colorado State Patrol.

The passenger train is known for its luxurious trips known as “Rockies to the Red Rocks,” where passengers ride along the Colorado River from Utah’s Salt Lake Valley to Colorado’s Front Range.

Highway 6 was closed and will remain closed for an extended period of time to allow for a thorough cleanup.

Troopers on scene said that six passenger vehicles and two locomotives were derailed and that the guard rails had been split and damaged in some areas as a result of the crash and it is unknown how many passengers were on the train at the time of the crash.

According to the state patrol, no passengers were reported injured during the crash. Passengers were taken off the train and transported via bus to their next destination in Moab, according to Michaela Kelly, a spokesperson for Canyon Spirit.

The luxury rail will be closed for a prolonged period of time for repairs following the crash.

According to CSP, the driver of the tanker was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
