Denver City Councilmember Shontel Lewis to run for mayor
Denver City Councilmember Shontel Lewis will run for mayor next year.
Lewis, a member of the City Council since 2023, will challenge incumbent Mayor Mike Johnston, who was also elected in 2023. Lewis joins the only other announced candidate, Lisa Calderón — a progressive candidate who has run for mayor three times.
Lewis represents District 8, which includes the Park Hill neighborhood and parts of East Colfax.
Lewis filed an affidavit with the city on Thursday to run for mayor. She was previously endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America during her 2023 campaign for the City Council and has often been described as a progressive.
The Denver Gazette attempted to reach Lewis through her office but did not receive a response.
Lewis, a native of Denver’s Five Points neighborhood, was previously a vice president at the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, according to her bio on the city’s website. She later was elected as the director of RTD’s board, during which she served as the inaugural chair of the Performance Committee, a role in which she helped facilitate RTD’s strategic priorities.
Lewis is a graduate of Manual High School and the University of Colorado Denver. She has two sons.
