A passenger on a motorcycle was pronounced dead Sunday and the driver was arrested after a theft led to a crash.

Mario Flores Ruiz-Esparza, 25, faces charges of motor vehicle theft after a crash at the intersection of South Federal Boulevard and West Virginia Avenue that killed the passenger on his bike, according to the Denver Police Department.

Federal Boulevard was closed in both directions while investigators were on the scene, the police said. Officials first posted about the incident at 4:40 a.m. Sunday

Ruiz-Esparza was also hospitalized with serious injuries from the crash, the police said. The victim will be identified by the Denver office of the Medical Examiner.
