Deputy, trooper shoot car theft suspect in Denver
An Adams County sheriff’s deputy and a Colorado State Patrol trooper shot a car theft suspect after tracking him to a Denver gas station.
The shooting unfolded at about 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Sinclair gas station at the intersection of 6th Avenue and Santa Fe Drive.
Matthew Packard, CSP chief, said that at about 9 a.m., a 35-year-old man allegedly stole a truck from a road construction site in eastern Adams County.
The truck had a tracker in it, which allowed officers from the Colorado Metropolitan Auto Theft Task Force to track the vehicle to the gas station, Packard said. An Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputy and a CSP trooper then confronted the man inside the gas station, Packard said.
The officers then opened fire, striking the suspect multiple times, Packard said.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation, but Packard said the police believed the suspect was armed.
At the scene, investigators could be seen inspecting roughly a dozen bullet holes in the glass door of the gas station, as well as looking around the floor of the store with flashlights.
The suspect was hospitalized and was in stable condition as of about 1 p.m., Packard said. He was not identified by police, and a spokesperson for the Denver Police Department said he will be identified once he is released from the hospital and booked into jail.
Neither of the officers was injured in the shooting, Packard said. It is unknown how many shots were fired or if the suspect opened fire.
Packard said the shooting is under investigation by Denver police’s Critical Incident Response Team, as well as by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
Santa Fe was closed for several hours Tuesday.
